Summer Reading FAQ

What is Summer Reading?

The Summer Reading Program is a reading challenge for all ages where participants can win prizes for reading books!

The children’s summer reading program is for ages 12 and under. Signups generally begin around the time school gets out for the summer.

The teen program is for ages 13 to 17 and the adult program is for ages 18 and older. Signups for both programs start in early June.

All programs end in early August. Specific dates are always posted on our website and social media pages in late May.

What are the prizes?

The main prize is raffle tickets. Participants earn raffle tickets that can be put towards gift card prizes of their choice! Gift cards are for local stores, restaurants, and attractions.

How does the children’s summer reading program work?

  1. Sign up at the children’s desk at any time during the program. You’ll get a goody bag and a free book!
  2. Come into the library weekly and let us know that you read that week.
  3. We will stamp your sheet and give you a “brag tag” for that week! A brag tag is a little tag that can be added to a loop and put on a bag, backpack, keychain, etc.
  4. You will also get a raffle ticket for the week! Write your (the child’s) name on it and a phone number that we can use to contact your grown-up if you win a prize.
  5. Prizes are not drawn until the end of the program in early August. Winners will be contacted by phone, so don’t forget to put a name and phone number on your ticket!

How do the teen & adult summer reading programs work?

The teen and adult program work the same way as each other.

  1. Sign up at the circulation desk on the adult floor. You’ll get a goody bag and a free book!
  2. Your bag contains yellow bookmarks with 5 one-hour increments on it. Cross one off for each hour that you read.
  3. When you’ve crossed off all 5 hours, turn the bookmark in to the circulation desk on the adult floor. We’ll give you more bookmarks, a raffle ticket, and you’ll also get to pick another free book!
    • You don’t have to come in every single week. This program is designed so you can go at your own pace.
    • Make sure you write your name and phone number on each ticket you get.
  4. There is also a bingo card in the bag with different activities on it. Cross off an activity each time you do one. Each time you get a bingo, show a librarian at the circulation desk and you’ll earn a raffle ticket.
  5. Prizes are not drawn until the end of the program in early August. Winners will be contacted by phone, so don’t forget to put a name and phone number on your ticket!
